Tariff |

|
A public document filed with the FCC or a PUC ( Regulators ) that outlines telecommunications services and rates. Usually, all subscribers are offered the same rate for a specific telephone service, based on published constraints. See also: Contract Tariffs |

TCP ( Transmission Control Protocol ) |
||
|
More reliable protocol for monitoring the control of data transmission -- because TCP checks data at the destination for confirmation that all packets are received. If any packets are missing, TCP resends them. See also: Packet Loss, UDP |

||
|
Telecommunications Device for the Deaf. |

| Telco ( Telephone Company ) | ||
| The local or regional telephone company that owns and operates telephone transmission lines to customer locations and Class 5 Central Office Switches. Telcos have connections to other COs, Tandem ( Class 4 Toll ) offices and may also connect directly ( See POP ) to IECs like WorldCom, AT&T, MCI, Sprint, LDDS, etc. See also: Carrier, LEC | ||

Same as a phone card or calling card. |

Telephone Company ( Telco ) |
||
|

Termination Gateway |

|
Specific computer equipment configured with certain hardware and software, which provides the electronic "bridge" from an IP network to the PSTN to connect to the destination telephone. See also: Gateway, Access Gateway, Switch, Router |

Third Party Billing |
||
|
Use of an outside service bureau for telephone bill processing such as: call rating, customer invoicing, collections, etc. |

Time of Day Routing |
||
|
Routing of telephone calls based on the time the phone call originates. (e.g. direct morning calls to East Coast operators and afternoon calls to West Coast operators, etc.). SMS/800 supports 15 minute time intervals. |

Toll |
||
|
A rated phone call (Contrast CDR - unrated phone call detail record). Tolls appear on the Invoice Detail. |

Toll Call |
||
|
A phone call with incremental use ( per / minute rounding ) charges. ( Often through a Class 4 Toll Office). |
||
Toll Fraud |
||
|
A crime in which a perpetrator obtains telecommunication services by: breaching computer security, using or selling stolen long-distance credit-card codes, or, accessing a PBX and using its communication facilities illegally. Toll Fraud is estimated to cost U.S. companies $1.6 billion/year. |

Touch Tone |
||
| Also known as Dual Tone Multi Frequency ( DTMF )The system used by a touch-tone telephone whereas each of the 12 keys (10 numeric keys 0-9 and the symbol keys: # and * ) generate audible signals when pressed, each touch tone signal consisting of two separate tones ( Dual-Tones ). The twelve Dual-Tones of the twelve keys of a touch-tone key pad are made by from a combination of 7 individual tone / frequencies. A touch tone keypad is aligned in a grid with 4 rows and 3 columns. There is a tone for each of the 4 rows and a tone for each of the 3 columns. 4+3=7 ( 4 rows + 3columns = 7 Tones ) The Dual-tone generated by each key consists of the two tones that align to its row and column. 4X7=12 for 12 keys and 12 dual-tones. Each dual-tone is recognized & identified by the switch at the central office when routing the telephone call. | ||
